This two-part tutorial in curved stair layout - 5,000 words, 10 illustrations, 25 pages - is among the most popular of our case studies, particularly for professionals. It sets up the math and common sense in how to design a staircase, particularly one that doesn't rise straight and true, and then lays out via a highly instructive case study our version of the 2D geometry to get you going in the direction you're headed if its how to build staircases.
To wit, about a year ago the AG was called up by a very professional mechanical engineer and Autocad operator. He had to shop-draw a pair of stone, curved staircases for production overseas and installation here in the US. He could shop-draw anything and had no real problem with working in 3D, it was the basic principles of curved stairway layout as represented herein that brought him to me. A couple of days just before Christmas '03, here is what he wrote:
Thanx for the help of almost a year ago on the Grandstairs I was working on. They are being installed right now... . I used a combination of AutoCAD and Rhino3d to produce the shop drawings and shop tickets.
