BEFORE THE ARCHITECT – Mrs. AG's House Designs AND HOME BUILDING PLAN DESIGNS
CAPE COD
. . . . . . .
Dear Visitor,
Mr. & Mrs. AG bought this Cape Cod in the worst shape of any house ever. On the outside overgrown with plantings and littered with paint peels, storm windows and screens. On the inside, the grossest kitchen to which they'd ever born witness. Interior doors were nailed shut. Food spills and splatters throughout the house from family food fights (no kidding). A raccoon colony in the attic - for years.
While major attention was focused on the inside, curb appeal counts, too. Here are a before and after of this Cape Cod taken from streetside. The hideous exterior condition of the place is well-hidden by the overgrowth (and the hideous interior condition of the place is well hidden by the outside walls). Mr. & Mrs. AG scraped and peeled and repaired and repainted the outside walls and trim and amendments, repaired the roof and its leaks, cut down and removed a whole heap of flora, added their nearly signature circular drive, enclosed the porch on the right for a get-away family room, and cleared outback, too. The house itself was a biggie, though you wouldn't know it by first sight: there was an L2 nearly as big as L1 (rare in story-and-a-half structures) thanks to a shed roof dormer across the backside, an L-shaped addition out back on the left that was almost as large as what's seen in these pics, and a deep basement below the entirety of the real property's footprint.
Let's have a peek at the only pics, poor as they are, left to find.
Before - the well-hidden house. A two-fer: 1. overgrowth hides the house; 2. overgrowth hides the debilitation.
After - Eminently, accessible and in-character to both style and neighborhood. The house wears well the previously secreted farmer's porch on the left and the newly enclosed porch on the right.
