BEFORE THE ARCHITECT – HOME DESIGN GUIDE, HOME BUILDING GUIDE
ARE THESE HOME DESIGNERS RIGHT FOR YOUR HOME PLAN?
ARE THESE HOME DESIGNERS RIGHT FOR YOU?
"Each and every participant in home designing and home building — know this: nothing replaces knowledgeable, experienced, impassioned and untiring vigilance." AG
· · · · · · ·
We take home building plans seriously. Do you? Is the term "overbuilt" good to read? It is to us. How about durability, convenience, safety? For us, no sweeter words when it comes to building. Get it done better. Get it done right.
Is Before The Architect right for you?
This website is about: home design and home building solutions, free home design information and free home building information, pure and free entertainment, designing insight from actual home designers with actual home builders. Bob Vila and armies of others taught you how to build homes. We go there and beyond. Here you learn what to build and why. We Draw, Review, Repair, and Redo home design and home building plans.
Our work with you can precede yours later on with an architect, review others' work with their express and written consent, sometimes together we can design a home without an architect, we can work with your structural engineers should their need arise, and with your own General Contractor. Most important, we work with you; our business format is a highly interactive home design and home building consulting, home designing, and home drawing.
If you're looking to stay out of it, let the other guy design and plan your home, then hire an architect. If you're looking to play an active, integral role in designing your home and developing its building plans, then think about hiring us.

is OUR TARGET MARKET right for you?
NINETEEN DEADLY SINs: are we right for you?

What's in it for you, right for you?
Experience personal success as an active player in your own building or remodeling.
Save money by not paying an architect 12-15% of total home building cost to do much the same work and less.
Relax in personal satisfaction in keeping your plans to yourself — outside the local gossip loop of neighbors, home builders, house contractors and subcontractors, home designers, warehousemen, competitors, and the like.
Gain peace of mind in a second opinion from both home designers and home builders.
Get along better with others knowing that Before The Architect does the hard stuff like home electrical wiring diagrams, isometric plumbing home drawing, do-it-yourself house plan details, roof plans and roofline home drawing, consulting for you with the pros, researching, taking the mystery out of structure and home designing and home building.
Have fun seeing your sketches come to life to-scale, dimensioned, and annotated.
Gain more knowledge of home design and home building.
Enjoy a happier home life in the home you really wanted and needed, rather than the one you're told you'd better have or you're are going to get whether you like it or not or don't have a clue about until it's built.
Enjoy a happier business life by getting a build out or remodel suited specifically to your needs and your customers', rather than what the landlord or property manager tells you you're going to get; and make more money.
Feel better about yourself, having taken firmer control of your future.
Take comfort that help is on the way — home remodeling help, home drawing help, home design help.
Help others, particularly the Autocad Granddad (and Mrs. AG).
Test yourself in the face of the issues and answers of home design, home drawing, and home building that pack this website. You'll find pearls of home design and home building wisdom scattered across this homestead on the fruited plain.
More, more, more. (Keep a close watch on this line.)

As a matter of practice, these are among our practices. We:
do not book forward, or take reservations.
do take on brief, independent consulting commissions from time to time.
do not accept most prospects. (see Deadly Sins, below).
do work with a client as long as it takes - sometimes that's hours, sometimes a year and more.
do not rush.
do not skip around in the queue.
do put down our tools and take you out of our queue after 5 days nonpayment or 5 days nonreply to our communications to you.
do not fix-price our work.
do not make cost estimates beyond the very general and not very often.
do not take kindly to unpleasant people.
do not hurry up.
do not offer contracts to sign or accept contracts for signing.
There's so much we don't do, and this is a partial list.
|
We don't do all factors involved in home design, home building, observation and monitor, and analyses of buildings of all kinds.
|
We do not practice architecture. Think of us as a boutique Mom-and- Pop shop drawing with a few special, virtually unique elements of hands-on home building background in a small segment of planning - detached, single-owner occupied wood frame dwellings, and relatedly-limited light commercial (e.g., simple home drawing of storefront layouts) and industrial work (e.g., an office layout w/in a plant facility).
|
We don't do multi-family housing, any government's projects, high-rises, strip malls, recreational facilities, tract housing, our own plans for retail sale, etc.
|
We don't know all the laws, codes, regulations, and standards all over the country. That's what architects are for, right?
|
We don't engineer anything. Common building practices beefed up by our experience are as far as we go. We rely on engineers for engineering, e.g., ridge beams, trusses, complicated foundations, etc.
|
We don't deal with regulators directly, unless you say so
|
We don't do site plans and analyses involving grading.
|
We don't lead teams of anyone.
|
We don't do building systems.
|
We don't manage to budgets.
|
We don't coordinate materials, crews, work processes, etc.
|
We don't work on our own with seismicity beyond IRC limits, steep slopes, anything in alternative materials, etc.
|
We don't make up home design from scratch - we only work with what you have begun and with what you want to achieve functionally. |
The AG and Mrs. AG like tough jobs, hand-drawn sketches, stock home plans and magazine cutouts, blueprints with your scribbles all over them, home drawing you've given up on, complicated and unique structures, home design where the other guys just do not get it, basement remodeling ideas and basement designs, bathroom remodeling ideas, family room additions, new decks, commercial build outs, old home plans, pool houses and spa enclosures, and on and on. Expect reasonable speed for an old guy, privacy and discretion, high-levels of choice, convenience, and value.
Fees are written out in a FEE Schedule designed to beat the pants off of most everybody else when it comes to practical experience in home consulting, designing, home building, and home drawing. At the start of working with you, it always takes some communicating to understand both what you want and what you need from Before The Architect. (That part's free.)
If this is your first visit, take a look at the Site MapS and Overview to see how this site is stuck together and what's stuck in it. Take a peek at the Quotes allegedly ascribed to the old boy (it's really him). And if you ever get to wondering when you're looking at the home drawing as to just exactly what all the words and symbols and abbreviations mean, take a peek at the Lexicon, notably the well-developed Abbreviations and the fledgling Dictionary. And there are LINKS. By the buckets.

NINETEEN DEADLY SINS: ARE WE RIGHT FOR YOU?
If any two from the following list apply to you, please do NOT contact Before The Architect. Go screw up someone else's business. We're not right for you. Here are some items on the list. (These lines may be lyricized a cappella to that oldie but goodie "Dolorous Dirge of the Dastardly Deadbeats.")
I am taking care of this for another (who’s paying).
I have a tiny budget that I won't tell you about, and I'll put up a big stink when you break over it.
I could do this, if I had the time.
Help me make the architect that I've hired listen to me.
I am doing this because I’m told that I have to.
My relative is the general contractor (a variant of which is, among others, I built a house once upon a time, and so I am an expert).
You do just enough to get the permit ( a variant of which is, among others, I don't need elevations).
Help me, engineers run from my problem like their hair was on fire.
You settle this dispute (including, but not limited to, marital disputes either between spouses or in spite).
I know you’re cheaper.
I know what this should cost (or I know what this should cost, so tell me).
I waited too long, now I'm in a hurry.
You can’t talk with my partner.
You send me the .dwg file.
Well, things aren't exactly the way I said the last time.
Show me some of your work [after not paying attention to 250+ pages of our website and 500+ pics of all aspects of our work].
Gotta have a contract.
