TUSCANY HOME CEILING DESIGN
bullet

Tuscany home ceiling design is variously shaped
bullet

Vaulted

bullet

Sloped as shed or roof-run

bullet

Roman arch, or barrel vault

bullet

Groin vault, or intersecting barrel vaults

bullet

Voltine (narrow, truncated Roman arches in symmetrical, repetitive rows, as of rippling clouds or waves)

bullet

Pyramidal

bullet

Slope, or full-roof (a/k/a cathedral)

bullet

Flat – low, characteristically

bullet

Tuscany home ceiling design is variously composed
bullet

Manmade masonry plaster, tile, and brick
bullet

Alone or

bullet

In combination with (apparent) wood structure

bullet

Wood alone
bullet

Wood (it is nigh unto impossible to Tuscany-Style ceilings without timbers or some sort in some pattern or other)

bullet

Preferably hewn look, rough-sawed ok, not smooth, full-measure and not planed or ripped to less than bulky-looking integerlike values as were old, true 2x4s, etc.

bullet

Ceiling beams – raw from the forest in the most elemental of structures – predominate in oak, elm, chestnut, and poplar

bullet

L1 floors, mostly masonry; L2 floors, mostly wood

bullet

Planks above minor, crossing beams above major crossing beams, posted or no between beam layers
bullet

May be white- or other color-washed (can look and maybe is pickled in appearance) or painted overall in a color

bullet

Several notes are in order before proceeding with Tuscany home ceiling design hereafter in application –
bullet

Wood beams, notably the larger beams, shall run into walls, utterly unlike Traditional design and construction, i.e., with no visible, or revealed, means or other indication of support at their extents

bullet

Emphatically, wood ceilings may be variously coated overall in a color per space

bullet

Rusticity varies directly with the inclusion and expanse of exposed wood in ceilings

bullet

Structure with wood ceiling, or the appearance of structure, should be respected in a couple of ways –
bullet

There are several first-class faux representations of wood beams – rough, hacked and adzed, intermittently deep-split, for example among others, http://www.aicmillworks.com/ceiling-beams/1/Rustic/material/faux-beam/length/width/height/ship/sides/closed/

bullet

Spacing and sizing from a maximum 12LI on a side or thereabouts should be mimicked as closely as possible to the physically practical in real terms . . . any wood ceiling building going to 12LI on-center spacing on rafterlike beams is serious, reflective, responsible building and AG’s seen several Tuscany examples in print

bullet

Directional, or compass rose, layout of planks (and, therefrom, the subordinate beam structures or apparent structures) should bear a realistic lay of roof or other space above, i.e., generally, counteraxially at right angles

bullet

In some spaces, designers note that some but not all of the then-conventional plank-and-beams structure is not evident, and, in its lieu smaller, even rugged-looking branchlike wood lengths from wall to wall revealed in plaster ground covering most of the engaged ceiling . . . eerily similar to early Southwestern adobe ceiling structures . . . seemingly quite primitive but stylistically viable

bullet

Eschew the temptation to copy or closely follow some of the pictured layouts of ‘rehabbed’ Tuscany ceilings of wood construct that are obviously phony-baloney ‘see me Mommy’s’ bereft of but shreds of physical reality to ‘em – please lay ‘em out with the help of folks who can build ‘em for real if asked

bullet

Masonry ceilings may be formed up finished a little messy and irregular in appearance, faux or no

bullet

Grout lines should be as thin as possible

bullet

In Tuscany home ceiling design, each and every luminaire or fan suspended from ceiling may be trimmed with a medallion in-style . . . needn’t be, but may be

bullet

Tuscany home ceiling design not finished in wood
bullet

Shall preferably be finished flat

bullet

Shall secondarily be finished as are abutting walls

bullet

Shall be finished smooth-to-low profile as in sand, preferably light sand and similar (see http://www.debwalton.net/cs/stucco/finishstyles.htm )

bullet

Of all the references these designers have laid eyes, two are, in their opinion, better than the rest
