BEFORE THE ARCHITECT – BUILDER DRAWINGS – DETAIL
Carpentry Plans, Knee Brace
· · · · · · ·
This is the residential remodeling, the adaptation of colonial house designs that you have seen throughout this website. This detail is still considerably in the future, but had to be included in the original building permit which inclusion developed into this and other engineering wonders.
This is about a knee brace obliged by a consulting engineer, for holding the second-story frame steady. These braces will be at the top end of each post at the post-band joint. Their purpose is to stiffen the build out structure to sheer force, from distorting the squared structure by sideways force or thrust of the superior mass. The drawing is packed with all that's needed for a framer on site to build it right, i.e., to the engineer's specifications, the first time. This is a serious structural element.
Detail — Knee brace.
