NAIL FASTENERS

YOU MAY FREELY QUOTE THE AG WITH PROPER ATTRIBUTION

Engineers are . . . well, they're engineers. It is my firm belief that God did not make engineers to spec homes.  To hold homes together in unusual circumstances of high wind and seismic events?  Yes.  To spec homes altogether?  No.  Before The Architect

Nails.  Nails.  Where for art thou, nail fasteners?

Down here, boss.

NAIL FASTENERS

Comment:  This section offers opinion which the AG respects and which he’s never, ever laid eyes on before.  The source from which this material is largely based:  Residential Structure & Framing , from the editors of The Journal of Light Construction , Hanley-Wood LLC, 1999-2002, “Strength of Nails” by Harris Hyman, pp26-27:

 1)     Common nails shall be applied when common nails are specified.

 2)     A single nail shall be prohibited in fastening anything to anything else.

 3)     Nails –

a)     Shall not be applied as permanent fasteners in withdrawal-critical fastenings on any vector, e.g.,

i)       Not to ceiling as in wallboarding,

ii)      Not to ledgers (not less than 5/8 linear inch galvanized carriage bolts only),

iii)    Not to joists into ledgers (note in this latter case that metal connectors nailed are not to be confused with members solely nailed), and

b)     Shall be spaced no more closely than ½ their length between any two, and

c)      Shall be spaced no more closely than ¼ their length to the edge of materials fastened, and

d)     Shall penetrate not less than 10 diameters into the end-material, and

e)     Shall not be toe-nailed for strength of any form and, therefore,

f)       Shall be toe-nailed

i)        Only for temporary placement of material

ii)      Except when expressly specified, e.g., in fastening header to jack stud

g)     Shall be

i)        Only deformed shank in unseasoned wood applications

ii)      Except only common on seismic applications of sheathing, unless otherwise specified by a qualified engineer
