COMPARISON IN ELEVATION, HOUSE SECTION DETAIL
By Before The Architect Copyright 2009 - 2010
If you mean "Do you subscribe in your work to the precept that form follows function, to the association of homeowners and home builders in design, the development of very comfortable spaces, to easy flows of traffic and sight from room to room and from inside to outside, and to an abundance of natural home light throughout?" Then, my answer is "Yes." I am also attracted to Christopher's notions of intimacy gradients, his inclinations to small spaces for sitting and semi-privacies, reckon his references to extended family cohabitation were prescient and are at least generally prescriptive, revel in his use of lightness and darkness throughout and particularly between larger spaces, and I enjoy his Hellenistic or Romanesque sense of interiors' leisure and, therefrom, leisurely interiors with my own precedent reservations as to both his ex cathedra pronouncements on structure and function. I wholly ascribe to the "quality without a name." Before The Architect
COMPARISON IN ELEVATION, HOUSE SECTION DETAIL
1) This drawing of complex house sections details interiors in elevation was one in a set of 5 Details – all required in this designer’s opinion – in order to get this custom design home framed right once, the first time
2) So, the drawing set included an unusual house section detail attempting
a) To reconcile in elevations by dimension to a base point and
b) To reference existing levels no three of which levels were observable contemporaneously until demolition ended, which could easily have been too late to say ‘Oops.”
Comment: Before The Architect goes to this detail to assist assurance that surprises of misunderstanding get wiped off the table. In this regard, the experience of AG and The Missus: lots more folks have difficulty with perspective, 3-dimensions, relationship of spaces especially on the vertical, compass directions, and so forth than you might expect.
